Lending Booms, Sharp Reversals and Real Exchange Rate Dynamics

چکیده

Emerging market economies in the nineteen nineties have experienced periods of booms followed by collapses in gross domestic product, consumption, traded and nontraded sector output and real exchange rate movements alongside unprecedented movements in foreign investor participation in these economies. An important feature of these episodes is the asymmetry in the pattern of booms and collapses. We introduce a natural search friction into the foreign investment decision in a small open economy and demonstrate that this can generate both the gradual appreciations in the real exchange rate and growth in production during expansions and the asymmetrically sharp downward adjustment during contractions. The magnitude of the reversals predicted by the model can be quantitatively large and empirically relevant. The adjustment hazard model of investment we present generates predictions that differ qualitatively from the standard quadratic adjustment cost model of investment. ∗I am especially thankful to Mark Aguiar, Ben Bernanke, Ariel Burstein, Steve Davis, Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, Amartya Lahiri, Wojciech Olszewski, Assaf Razin, Kenneth Rogoff, Alwyn Young and two anonymous referees for their advice on this paper. Resolving the Interest Rate Premium Puzzle: Capital Inflows and Bank Intermediation in Emerging Economies

This paper develops a simple bank-based analytical framework to explain why and how capital inflow surges and lending booms could lead to higher real interest rates in the domestic economy, even after adjusting for country/currency risk premia and exchange rate changes. While this phenomenon of ever-rising capital inflows and sustained possibly, even widening interest rate spreads is an importa...

Small Business Lending and the Bank-Branch Network

In this paper, I examine the role of banks in propagating local economic shocks from one area to another through their network of bank branches, by exploiting a newly developed branch-level dataset. Specifically, I examine the change in the geographical distribution of small business loans within each bank network in response to: 1) increases in deposit growth due to presence in areas with new ...

The Impact of Exchange and Inflation Rate Instability on Lending Behavior of Iranian Banks

Exchange rate instability brings about significant changes in the domestic and foreign sectors that can impose negative effects on the whole economy. The present study investigates the effect of exchange and inflation rate instability on the lending behavior of Iranian banks by using data of the 10 banks over the time period 1382-1397(2003-2018). To do this, at first, a GARCH(1,1) of the exchan...

How do Sudden Stops of Capital Flows Affect Currency Crises in Asia?

Sudden stops can be characterized by sharp reversals in capital inflows, large declines in output, and steep collapses in real asset prices (Mendoza and Smith, 2009). In almost all recent crises, capital account reversals amounting to more than 10% of an afflicted country’s GDP have occurred (Calvo and Reinhart, 1999 and Nabli, 1999). More specifically, reversals in capital flows to emergin...

آثار تکانه‌های نفتی و سیاست‌های پولی بر رفتار چرخه‌ای قیمت مسکن

One of the most important aspects of vulnerability of the Iran economy can be observed in depreciation of real exchange rate during the oil booms. This phenomenon is called "Dutch disease". In other words when a country starts exporting natural resources, the ensuing capital inflows lead to an increase in demand. The real exchange rate (RER) typically appreciates due to “spending effect” as the...
